The Bloggy Mommy

The Scholarship Diva Returns.

She's back, and with one going to college next year, I'm listening.  If you haven't met The Scholarship Diva, here she is. And she knows her stuff.

ScholarshipDiva

I have not been an active blogger lately, but many of you have been active readers and hunters!  It's always exciting to get your emails and see new followers and "likes" on Facebook.  Web activity makes me feel like I'm meeting a need and giving families hope for finding money for college.

In addition to being swamped with grading college English papers and editing a dissertation this semester, I have also helped my daughter apply to 13 physical therapy programs and graduate schools and worked with my son who's filling out an extremely time-consuming application for a Truman Fellowship for grad school. Not to mention the personal appointments, phone calls, and e-mail conversations with several high school seniors and parents....Anyway, the bottom line is that sometimes I'm too busy looking for money for my own kids to be much help to you.  Sorry about that!

Many large-scale scholarships from major organizations like Coca-Cola have already passed and others will be due soon (Elks Most Valuable Student Competition deadline is December 5). However, there will still be plenty of opportunities to come, especially in early Spring, so I'll start posting more links.

In the meantime, here's a reminder of what you need to be doing:
  • Seniors--By now you should have applied for admission AND financial aid to your preferred schools.  Your resume and recommendation letters should be handy and ready to mail out, as well as copies of your current transcript. You should also be a frequent caller to your high school guidance counselor and the university financial aid officers, encouraging them to  keep you informed of scholarship opportunities that may cross their desks.

  • Juniors--From now on, take the ACT every time to try and raise your score. You should also be compiling your preferred list of colleges you want to visit and apply to. Don't wait for a college's special preview day; sometimes your visit will be more productive if you schedule your own appointments with subject-specific professors and admissions/scholarship counselors. Also, be working on updating your resume, including all activities, jobs, and community service/volunteer work since beginning of 9th grade.

  • Parents--Either take on this responsibility yourself (I treated it like a job during Mabry's senior year) or find a way to motivate your student to stick with this process, because it's a lot of work, no matter who does it.

Happy hunting!

What exactly is it concerning Orlando Dior timepieces that produces these thus well-known? Physical appearance, components, design, the particular Dior identify: they're are just some of the causes.
