Last Saturday night just after dark the Sims family was sitting in the den enjoying the fireplace and a little TV when the doorbell rang. The kids ran to answer, but no one was there--only a bucket of Halloween goodies and a note that read "You've just been booed!"
I don't get the warm fuzzies very often, but this made me fuzzy all over. It was a feel good moment for the whole family. "What kind of neighborhood have we moved into that has such fun traditions?" said Captain Fun. This one had his name all over it.
The older kids tried to figure out who booed us while the younger kids squealed as they tore into candy, small games and neon vampire teeth. The first ever, I must say, that they could call their own since we don't typically encourage imitating vampires at our house.
On Monday when I consulted the Moms at the Bus Stop (I am giving my new friends an official title since they frequently find their way into my blog), they confirmed it and gave me some booing guidance. I reiterated how over-the-top friendly I am finding Virginia. I hope they aren't tired of hearing it because I will probably tell them again.
Today when the kids get home from school, we are going to the Dollar Tree to collect the loot for two booings. Then tonight, after dark, we will deliver. I think I am more excited about it than the kids, and if you have been reading my blog for very long, you know it takes a lot to make that happen.
If you decide to start the booing tradition in your neighborhood, here are a few guidelines:
Finally, keep it easy. "No pressure!" the note in the boo bucket said. Good thing, since technically I was supposed to boo within 48 hours of being booed. Uh, it has taken me a few hours longer than that. That's okay--the note gave me permission. I am keeping it fun.
It's a scary thought, but I might even have more fun tonight than the Captain himself.
