The Big Picture

November 2013

Thirteen Reasons to Be Thankful.

Our Thanksgiving meal is over, but I couldn't let the day slip by without expressing my gratitude.  "I'm thankful that I have more kids than can fit around this table," I said today when it was my turn. It's true, isn't it? Every year we are deeply grateful for the ones we love the most.

I set out to write a "Top Ten Reasons to Be Thankful" but under the circumstances, I had to stretch it a bit.

13. Robert (aka Captain Fun). The summer of my 19th year, a (very) few guys showed up at my door to take me out every now and then.

Another Top Ten: Children's Writers

If I am addicted to anything, I am addicted to books.  Not only do books fill the built-in shelves of our home, but they also spill into baskets tucked beside recliners, and then onto the floor. I am certain I qualify for gold membership on my book swap. (The link is but don't say I didn't warn you if you get hooked.)

And I'm not the only one.  In fact, everybody at our house relishes reading.  That being said, here are my top ten favorite children's writers, some old, some new.

The Scholarship Diva: Burgers and Brains: Finding Scholarship Money in Unlikely Places

The Scholarship Diva has been at it again. Today I include three posts from her--opportunities that would be mighty hard to find without a little help from The Diva.

High school seniors, the deadline clock is rapidly ticking for your best chance of winning scholarships for college.  The money goes FAST, so make sure you get your share.
  • If you have good grades and ACT/SAT scores, apply for financial aid at your preferred college choices NOW; don't wait for their deadlines--the money will be gone by then.

Mom Dot-isms

Today is Mom Dot's 87th birthday.  I asked folks from her (and my) past to send her birthday cards; she got an avalanche of mail.

For lunch today, I brought her a quarter-pounder from McDonald's.  Tried to get her a milk shake but the machine was broken.  (McDonald's is one of the secrets to her longevity, she insists).

Yesterday we went to beautiful Carter Mountain in Charlottesville, Virginia (Thomas Jefferson's Monticello is just down the street).  It was a perfect day, sunny and crisp and crowded with people.
