The Big Picture

Hope is in swimming lessons for a few weeks, and today I told her I would get in and play with her while we waited for her teacher. Playing has never come easily to me (that's Captain Fun's department), but I knew what I had to do: suit up. Once her lesson began, as I was swimming my laps, I kept thinking of that word...Up...and all the ways we moms might use it.

My oldest is thirty, my youngest is five, and I am, well, a little weary. As I enter this third decade of parenting, I have grown fond of a new (to me) phrase...Mom up.

Here are some buzz words for you moms out there on this Mother's Day. May they come to mind at just the right time.

Got mileage? Tune up.
Isolated? Team up.

Feeling weary? Charge up.
Respect waning? Change up.

Hard on yourself? Let up.
Slacking off?  Get up.

Clutching your old (pre-kid) freedoms?  Give up.
Define the mom your want to be, then live up.

Kids need you--show up.
If you're stuck, grow up.

At the beach, suit up.
In the snow, boot up.

Once a day, feet up.
Back talk? Turn the heat up.
Tell your kids to line up
and to put the whine up
Require that they shine up.

In a hurry? Hold up.
Habit of griping?  Hush up.
Distracted mom? Heads up.

Made a mistake? Own up.
Screen head? Put the phone up.

One day they will grow up.

I think one of my sons could put a rap beat to that.

Someone said motherhood goes from cop to coach to counselor to, finally, cheerleader. I have found that to be true in my journey.

Heads up, Moms. Upward and onward. Don't let this culture raise your kids. Even the scriptures tell us, "The rod and reproof bring wisdom, and a child left to himself brings his mother to shame."  Proverbs 29:15

Motherhood is a marathon.

Suit up.
Show up.
Mom up.
And above all, look up.

"I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills; from whence cometh my help. My help comes from the Lord who made Heaven and earth."
                                            -- Psalm 121:1-2

Happy Mother's Day. (Remember, this is your only designated day to put your feet up.)

And, for us marathon moms who have had 'bonus babies': never. Ever. Give up! If there's anyone who has the suit to suit up for a third decade of parenting, Margie, it's you!! Of course it never hurts that she is so stinking cute!!
